Dear Baby,

Your father wanted to bring you into a world where Barack Obama is president. He has gotten his wish. We watched in amazement last night as an African American man was elected president of the United States.

It was one of the best moments in my many years in this country. I could not have imagined that this would happen in my lifetime, but it has.

Last night's victory was bittersweet. Unfortunately, the citizens of California in a bare majority, amended the state constitution to ban gay marriage. It is a very sad moment on an historic day. I want you to understand that everyone is equal - no matter what. I implore you to grow up loving and accepting all people - no matter how narrow-minded and bigoted others may be.
